About Me

Mike Weerakoon "Since childhood he has analysed, experimented, studied, made."

I was born and raised in Sri Lanka-or as it was still known at the time,Ceylon. From an early age, how things worked intrigued me.Some of my happiest memories are of a chilhood spent fixing and making. When I was 12 years old,my grandfather set a challenge for me to repair a broken wall clock.I embraced the project enthusiastically and was successful. The seeds were sown for a lifetime of discovery and exploration.

Influences

For the last 20 years I have been designing and making.

Living on the western seaboard has had a huge influence on my work-Galway,its’ people and sea-faring tradition.

I am fascinated by the 'old' world and how it has developed.Ancient ideas with new thoughts, the contrast of traditional materials fused with contemporary design.

Science, nature, the elements...I love to combine these and create art.

Outdoor Sculpture "Through travel he has explored, discovered and been inspired..."
My hunger for knowledge was greater than anything else. Leaving Sri Lanka,I travelled over 30,000 miles,by land to get to Europe. I made my way across India,Pakistan,Afghanistan,Iraq,Persia,Turkey and Bulgaria, finally settling in Germany where I studied engineering.I eventually made my way to Ireland where I have lived and worked for more than 35 years.I still travel at every oportunity available. It's truly inspiring to visit and meet different places and people.

I am an artist.I am a scientist.I am an inventor.
